Speak up…literally!

Wow it’s been a while since I’ve written a thing…and I know that the title of my blog really gives way to that of many a family update but today I feel the need to vent.

Today was awful. It sucked.

To bring everyone up to speed, I started to lose my hearing (not quite ready to call it deaf) in the summer. Upon further testing and doctor’s appointments, to date, I have lost about 95% of hearing in my right ear (to understand what this feels like stick a few cotton balls in one ear, put on a loud white noise machine and find a track on iTunes of a constant high pitched ring that doesn’t end but only fluctuates in tone, volume and intensity…I’m sure there’s an app for that).

WHAT!?! I am sure most of you are saying!

I reveal my struggle for three reasons:

1. Please forgive me if I ask you to repeat yourself or maybe you think that I being rude because I am not listening to you.

2. If I don’t remember part of a conversation that we had its likely because I smiled and nodded instead of asking you to repeat yourself or maybe have you think that I am rude because I’m not listening to you during a meeting, a conversation in a crowded area involving more than two people, or not participating in the total fun banter while watching the Bachelorette every week (although the top right seat really plays to my good ear).

3. I am going to Disneyland in 7 days with my kids – a total dream of mine since before I knew them, and I have come to the realisation that I will have to have some help to aid my hearing impairment (still not deaf)…and my immediate family may still be in the “WHAT!?!” group of this tiny audience reading this blog.

Questions, concerns please feel free to ask. I am coming to terms with this; know that it may get worse and am learning to accept the word “impairment”.

xx mara

PS – the kids are AMAZING!

  1. Mara, Disneyland will be amazing, I can't wait for you to know what it feels like to see the gates in front of you and know you are about to walk through them into the happiest place on earth. It's true, it really is. What makes it even better is who you're there with and you will be sharing this dream with your incredible children who will be overwhelmed & over-stimulated before they even get through that gate :) You will be amazed by what you see every second you are there. At the end of the day you will all be exhausted but will fight it because you won't want to leave. Disneyland is magical and turns us all into little kids who remember how much we loved (or still love) Mickey, Minnie and all the other characters we grew up with. Your cheeks will hurt from smiling & laughing so much, there's no way to describe it, you've just got to go.

So have FUN!! and take lots of pics please!!

    Love you tons
