The Blatz Babies + 8 (adults)
“It may be a crazy life, but it’s our life” – Kate Gosselin
First of all, I cannot believe that I just quoted Kate Gosselin. Second of all, no other statement could have been truer on Sunday.
Often on Sunday evenings, the Blatz family will gather for dinner. When Chris and I started dating this was a very different experience; only one person would speak at a time (enforced by Steve-o), all of us “kids” would do the dishes each with our own zone (washing, drying, flatware, glassware, random bowls that end up on the kitchen table because no one can quite remember where they go...), and we would all gather after and have dessert or another cocktail.
OH MY HAVE TIMES CHANGED!
Five years, three weddings, five kids later, and a dramatically bigger dining room table - there are no longer eight at the table, there are 12 (plus grandma and Jack who is usually in someone’s arms), and approximately nine conversations going on at once (and yes that does mean that more than one person is just talking to them self). While the new additions and loud dinners have only made things more fun, this Sunday that just past was quite the crazy experience!
Now let’s play the matching game, simply match the situation with the Baby.
· Grabs Knife
· Wonders off
· Shockingly stays out of all trouble
· Teething mess (this one might be easy)
· Falls asleep
· Tyler – 3 ½ years old
· Leif – 2 years old
· Kamryn – almost 2 years old
· Matias – 1 year old
· Jack – 4 ½ months old
POOR Matias. The baby, with the extensive reach, grabbed the knife and cut three of his fingers. He was such a good guy, letting his mummy squeeze his fingers.
Oh Kamryn! Once we had all recovered from the trauma of the Matias incident we sat down for dinner...only to notice that Kamy was nowhere to be seen. Every one leaped from their seats and there was about a 60 second period of time when the world stopped...finally Carly and I stumbled across the little drama queen (wearing a diaper and pink bows in her hair), standing in the wagon, in the middle of the back yard...phew!
Tyler was a very good boy on Sunday. He played ball with his uncles (while Leif twirled on the grass), and was very polite.
Jack was the obvious choice for teething...although on a positive note, Auntie Sarrah did spot a white spec on his gums!
And finally Leif – clearly exhausted from his evening fell asleep on the couch.
I think that there are a few lessons that we, as a family, have learned from our Sunday night debacle:
· Use plastic knives
· Perform spontaneous head counts (often...these kids move FAST)
· Open an extra bottle of wine
· And ALWAYS have a camera with in arms reach (this is clearly a lesson for me)
